BI Pathfinder is a methodology based software tool providing a structured approach
to specifying and documenting BI Reporting systems.
A key feature of Pathfinder, essential to its success, is the independence of each
of these decomposed tasks. Because they are independent, the results of applying
them can be added together to determine the overall information requirements of
the business intelligence user. All other approaches to this problem do not have
this degree of independence.
In the past requirements determination for BI has always involved multiple approaches;
|
• |
Discussions and interviews |
|
• |
Volunteered information |
|
• |
Balanced scorecard analyses |
|
• |
Critical Success Factor analyses |
|
• |
Tracking executive activity |
The resulting information requirements specifications will probably:
|
• |
Overlap, and require substantial culling |
|
• |
Not be complete, as whole areas of query/reporting needs may be
overlooked |
|
• |
Contain a mix of information required for “routine”
regular reporting with that needed to solve problems that rarely arise – requiring
further analyses/interviews |
|
• |
Be confusing and frustrating for executives due to the ad-hoc nature
of the project |
|
• |
Require skilled, experienced, consultants to yield good results |
The BI determination methodology is a proven, complete procedure for determining
the information needs of business intelligence users. It is based on extensive research
into the information needs of those users. The focus of the Pathfinder methodology
is finding out what is the right information to deliver to users in a timely fashion.
It achieves this through the decomposition of the overall BI specification task
into several smaller tasks.
